GOD SPEAKS TO US
MOMENT WITH THE YOUNGER CHURCH Pastor Marc
THE GOSPEL READING Luke 24:13-35 Pastor Jill
The Walk to Emmaus 13 Now on that same day two of them were going to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem, 14 and talking with each other about all these things that had happened.
15 While they were talking and discussing, Jesus himself came near and went with them, 16 but their eyes were kept from recognizing him.
17 And Jesus said to them, “What are you discussing with each other while you walk along?” They stood still, looking sad.
18 Then one of them, whose name was Cleopas, answered Jesus “Are you the only stranger in Jerusalem who does not know the things that have taken place there in these days?”
19 Jesus asked them, “What things?” They replied, “The things about Jesus of Nazareth, who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people,
20 and how our chief priests and leaders handed him over to be condemned to death and crucified him.
21 But we had hoped that Jesus was the one to redeem Israel. Yes, and besides all this, it is now the third day since these things took place.
22 Moreover, some women of our group astounded us. They were at the tomb early this morning,
23 and when they did not find Jesus’s body there they came back and told us that they had indeed seen a vision of angels who said that Jesus was alive.
24 Some of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said, but they did not see Jesus.”
25 Then Jesus said to them, “Oh, how foolish you are and how slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have declared!
26 Was it not necessary that the Messiah should suffer these things and then enter into his glory?”
27 Then beginning with Moses and all the prophets, Jesus interpreted to them the things about himself in all the scriptures.
28 As they came near the village to which they were going, Jesus walked ahead as if he were going on.
29 But they urged him strongly, saying, “Stay with us, because it is almost evening and the day is now nearly over.” So Jesus went in to stay with them.
30 When Jesus was at the table with them, he took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them. 31 Then their eyes were opened, and they recognized him, and he vanished from their sight.

WE RESPOND TO GOD
CONFIRMATION: AFFIRMATION OF BAPTISM
Invitation
Bruce: We invite Skylar and Lillyana Johnson to come forward to affirm their baptism.
Jill: Friends in Christ, we are all received into the church through the sacrament of baptism. Skylar and Lillyana found nurture and support through this family of Christ. Through prayer and study, they have been led by the Holy Spirit to affirm their baptism and to claim in our presence their covenantal relationship with Christ and the members of the church. They are here for service to Jesus Christ, using the gifts which the Holy Spirit has given them.
Sentences
Bruce: Hear the words of Jesus. I am the vine, and you are the branches. Anyone who abides in me, and I in that person, is the one who bears much fruit. If you abide in me and my words abide in you, ask whatever you will, and it shall be done for you. If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love. These things I have spoken to you that my joy may be in you, and your joy may be full.
Questions of the Candidates
Jill: Skylar and Lillyana, do you desire to affirm your baptism into the faith and family of Jesus Christ?
Skylar and Lilly: I do.
Jill: Do you renounce the powers of evil and desire the freedom of new life on Christ?
Skylar and Lilly: I do.
Jill: Do you profess Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior?
Skylar and Lilly: I do.
Jill: Do you promise by the grace of God, to be Christ’s disciple, to follow in the way of Jesus, to resist oppression and evil, to show love and justice, and to witness to the work and word of Jesus Christ as best you are able?
Skylar and Lilly: I promise, with the help of God.
Jill: Do you promise, according to the grace given you, to grow in the Christian faith and to be a faithful member of the church of Jesus Christ, celebrating Christ’s presence and furthering Christ’s mission in the world?
Skylar and Lilly: I promise, with the help of God.
Affirmation of Faith: Sharing of Statements of Faith
Prayers of the Congregation (Candidates Kneeling)
Jill: Let us pray together.
All: Almighty God, who in baptism received Skylar and Lillyana into your church, forgave their sin, and promised them eternal life, increase in the gifts of your Holy Spirit. Grant them love for others, joy in serving you, peace in disagreement, patience in suffering, kindness toward all people, goodness in evil times, faithfulness in temptation, gentleness in the face of opposition, and self-control in all things. Strengthen them for their ministry in the world, through Jesus Christ our Savior. Amen.
Act of Confirmation
Jill: I invite the family of Skylar and Lilly and their faith partners to come forward and place their hands upon them. We will begin with Skylar and then move to Lilly.
Jill: O God, in the grace of Jesus Christ, you have accepted this your servant. Skylar, through the water of baptism. Nourish in her the power of your Holy Spirit that she may serve you in the world. And let all God’s people say: “Amen!”
Jill: O God, in the grace of Jesus Christ, you have accepted this your servant. Lillyana, through the water of baptism. Nourish in her the power of your Holy Spirit that she may serve you in the world. And let all God’s people say: “Amen!”
Confirmation Prayer
Jill: We rejoice, O Merciful God, with Skylar and Lillyana in the gift of the Holy Spirit, and in the Spirit’s power to awaken us to new truth and to inspire us to venture into fullness of life. We give you thanks that they have been moved to affirm their baptism. Help them to live not for themselves alone but for Christ and those whom Christ loves. Keep them steady and abounding in hope, never giving up, pressing toward the goal of life with you in Jesus Christ.
All: Amen.
Address
Jill: By your baptism you were made one with us in the body of Christ, the Church. Today we rejoice in your journey of faith which has brought you to this time and place. We celebrate your presence in this household of faith.
