Missions

Missions

We believe that mission is a integral part of our life here at First Congregational United Church of Christ. We try to support local, national and global missions. Some of the missions that we have supported are Someplace Safe, the Heifer Project, the Food Shelf, Car Care Program, Habitat for Humanity and so many others. We strongly believe that we should be the hands and feet of Jesus loving others and attempting to meet needs as we are able. Below is a selection of missions that we support.

The Bountiful Basket

The bountiful basket sits near the elevator and collects items for the selected mission which are delivered to the various missions that we support. By the end of the month, the basket is usually full to overflowing with items. Past recipients have included the Douglas County Food Shelf, Someplace Safe, the United Way and many others. There is usually a list of items near or on the basket of wanted items for the local charity.

The Angel Care Team

The Angel Care Team is a group that seeks to support our church community that is in need. They bring a welcome smile and visit as well as sometimes s meal or blanket to those in need. They try to connect with the bereaved, ill or those recovering from a hospitalization. We have another group that tries to connect with those that are homebound.

The Tree of Lights

The tree of lights is a visual representation of the collection made each Christmas Season.  Each year the missions committee selects a different group that will receive the monetary collection. Each bulb is lit as $25 is donated and each year the tree continues to have more bulbs lit each week usually encompassing the entire tree. Past charities have included District 206’s Meals with Care, the Food Shelf and many others.

Quilts

The Friendly Service Group makes and distributes many quilts throughout the year. Many are given to the United Way, Alomere Hospital, and Someplace Safe.

5 for 5

There are five missions that our denomination sponsors and our local church has elected to also sponsor. They include One Great Hour of Sharing, Our Churches Wider Mission, Neighbors in Need, Strengthen the Church and the Christmas Fund. These funds go to support domestic and international missions that seek to create economic sustainability and long term recovery. They can provide clean water, food, healthcare, education, assistance to refugees, emergency relief, aid for clergy and more.

About the UCC - A Church of Extravagant Welcome, Seeking a Just and Peaceful World

For over 400 years, the United Church of Christ has been the church of firsts, weaving God’s message of hope and extravagant welcome with action for justice and peace. We are a church where Jesus the healer meets Jesus the revolutionary, and where together, we grow a just and peaceful world.

Our history is filled with ways our faith and call for justice have effected change in our communities, and our response to the demands of our faith is woven into the history of our country.
