*INVOCATION                                                         Pastor Marc

*CALL TO CONFESSION

*SILENT PERSONAL REFLECTION

*PRAYER OF CONFESSION (unison)                   Judy

O God, the movement of the Spirit scared us. It disrupts the status quo.

We hire professionals to preach and to prophecy; how can we trust someone without the education and proper credentials to speak for you?

We confess change is hard for us; the Spirit should just bring people here.

Forgive our resistance when we need to sing in the streets where evil voices may challenge us.

Help us to boldly pray in protest when justice is being denied by our public officials.

We confess and ask forgiveness.

Offer us grace, O God, in Christ’s name. Amen.

*WORDS OF GRACE

My friends, God hears our confessions AND our concerns.

God continues to be with us in our struggles and offers us grace and encouragement.

God does not, however, let us off the hook. God offers us second chances so that we might do better. God offers us grace so that we might actually forgive ourselves and those who have wronged us, moving on to where justice and change call us to hard actions.

You are forgiven. Now go with the power of the Holy Spirit and be the change and grace that world so desperately needs to see in our faithful actions. Amen.

MOMENT WITH THE YOUNGER CHURCH                                 Pastor Marc

SCRIPTURE READING Numbers 11:16-17 & 26-29                                                           Judy

16So the Lord said to Moses, ‘Gather for me seventy of the elders of Israel, whom you know to be the elders of the people and officers over them; bring them to the tent of meeting, and have them take their place there with you. 17 I will come down and talk with you there; and I will take some of the spirit that is on you and put it on them; and they shall bear the burden of the people along with you so that you will not bear it all by yourself.

26Two men remained in the camp, one named Eldad, and the other named Medad, and the spirit rested on them; they were among those registered, but they had not gone out to the tent, and so they prophesied in the camp. 27And a young man ran and told Moses, ‘Eldad and Medad are prophesying in the camp.’ 28 And Joshua, the assistant of Moses, one of the chosen men, said, ‘My lord Moses, stop them!’ 29But Moses said to Joshua, ‘Are you jealous for my sake? Would that all the Lord’s people were prophets, and that the Spirit of Lord would be put on all of them!’

ANTHEM                   Every Time I Feel the Spirit  Chancel Choir

SCRIPTURE READING                                            Judy

Acts 2:1-21

1When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. 2And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. 3Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. 4All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability.

5Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven living in Jerusalem. 6And at this sound the crowd gathered and was bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in the native language of each. 7Amazed and astonished, they asked, ‘Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? 8And how is it that we hear, each of us, in our own native language? 9Parthians, Medes, Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, 11 Cretans and Arabs—in our own languages we hear them speaking about God’s deeds of power.’ 12 All were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, ‘What does this mean?’ 13 But others sneered and said, ‘They are filled with new wine.’

14 But Peter, standing with the eleven, raised his voice and addressed them: ‘People of Judea and all who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and listen to what I say. 15Indeed, these are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is only nine o’clock in the morning. 16No, this is what was spoken through the prophet Joel:

17“In the last days it will be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh,

and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy,

and your young shall see visions, and your elderly shall dream dreams.

18Even upon my slaves, all of them, in those days I will pour out my Spirit; and they shall prophesy.

19And I will show portents in the heaven above and signs on the earth below, blood, and fire, and smoky mist.

20The sun shall be turned to darkness and the moon to blood, before the coming of the Lord’s great and glorious day.

21Then everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

May God add a blessing to the reading and the hearing of our

holy scriptures for this morning. Amen.

WOW Wednesdays and Sabbath Saturdays

During Pastor Jill’s renewal leave, we have planned activities for the congregation that will encourage them to reflect, be creative and build our faith. Once a month we will have an activity on Wednesday and a Saturday.   Our next WoW Wednesday is June 17 beginning at 5:15 with a meal.  At 6:00 p.m. Jennifer Weber will guide participants through a session of somatic meditation, a calming mindfulness technique focused on the body. This practice emphasizes awareness of physical sensations to support emotional health, healing, and overall well-being.   Everyone can do it in their chair.  No experience needed. Sign ups for all Wow Wednesdays and Sabbath Saturdays are at the back of the sanctuary.  You can also call the office to sign up.

We are an inclusive community that welcomes extravagantly, seeks God and follows Jesus into the world.

This congregation is a member of the Open and Affirming Coalition of the United Church of Christ and honor the dignity of each person created in God’s image. All are welcome here.
