This Little Light of Mine

READING FROM THE Gospel  Matthew 5:1-12       Pastor Jill

The Beatitudes 5 When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain, and after he sat down, his disciples came to him. 2 And Jesus began to speak and taught them, saying:

3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 4 “Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. 5 “Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.

6 “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. 7 “Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy. 8 “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.

9 “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. 10 “Blessed are those who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

11 “Blessed are you when people revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account.

12 Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

THE SACRAMENT OF HOLY COMMUNION

INVITATION TO THE TABLE

COMMUNION PRAYER

Leader:  Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the Realm of God.

All:          We are poor beggars, O God. Feed us with your grace.

Leader: Blessed are the broken hearted, for God holds them close.

All:          In this broken bread, hold us and comfort us.

Leader: Blessed are the gentle, for you give them all of Life.

All:          Nourish us with Christ’s tender love, that we, too may be gentle.

Leader: Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for deeper love.

All:          Satisfy us with your love; and deepen our hunger and thirst for you.

Leader: Blessed are they who are merciful, knowing you shower them with mercy.

All:          We give thanks for your mercy, that we too may live lives of mercy.

Leader: Blessed are those who are pure in love, for they shall see God.

All:          In this meal fill us with the love of Christ for all the world.

Leader: Blessed are those who bring reconciliation, for they are God’s beloved children.

All:          In this meal we are one, all of us saints and sinners,
at peace with you and with one another.

Leader: Blessed are those whom the world scorns, for God is present with them.

All:          Sharing this meal, we are one with the outcast of this world, as Jesus was an outcast.

The Blessing and the Covenant

Pour out your Holy Spirit on these gifts of bread and cup,
that they may be for us the body and blood of Christ.
Pour out your Holy Spirit on us,
that we may be the Body of Christ for the world.
Strengthen us with courage to bear witness to love and to work for justice,
to devote our lives to nonviolence and the mending of the world,
despite the world’s resistance, to be your saints in the name of Christ.
Amen.

On the night in which he gave himself for us
Jesus took bread, blessed it,. broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying,
“Take and eat; this is my body.”

In the same way, after the supper he took the cup,
blessed it with thanks and gave it to them, saying,
“Drink of this, all of you. This is my blood,
poured out for you and for many, in a new Covenant,
which is the forgiveness of sin.”

As long as we break this bread and share this cup

we remember his death and resurrection, until he comes again.

Giving of the Bread and Cup

(You are invited to come forward as you are able to receive the bread and the cup.  Please notify an usher if you prefer to be served where you are sitting.  A Gluten free option is available upon request.  As we receive God’s good gifts, let us join in singing:
